Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these medications need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
